What page is this on? I'd like to staple a copy of Even's message
to that page so that I don't forget and make a silly mistake.

I think the best method is done using words and printable characters.
For example, "<cntrl>D", "<alt>downarrow" [...]

This is the perfect argument for not replacing objc_edit()/form_keybd()
unless you absolutely must. You can use all of the extended features
of LTMF with MasterBrowse, or TeraDesk, and others. (Even though they
have their own windowed dialog libraries).

Rather than an icon or symbol, why not have a little note at the bottom
of your dialog box saying "A double click on an editable field will
access the file selector." in small text. That way the user does not
have to know what the icon/symbol means, and the problem with the user
not expecting older programs to have that feature will not arise.
Just a suggestion... If space is limited in the dialog, this might not
be workable.
